Corruption is the use of legislated powers by government officials for illegitimate private gain and is.one of the Philippine Government's illness. There is no day without a banner news about a corrupt politician or a governor, using the government's funds for their own needs. It's like our government is the veins and arteries of a human heart where corruption, which is the blood, transfers it to the other branches of our administration.
For years we are searching for a way to stop this disease that is slowing destroying the reputation of our country but if we analyze it clearly, we, the citizens, is already the solution to this problem and this can be stated as mathematical equations.
First, here are the variables:
T = Transparency
M = Monopoly
D = Discretion
P = Participation
A = Accountability
Then this is the formula: "C = - T (M+D) - A" where Corruption is due to the absence of transparency resulting from monopoly and discretion plus the absence of accountability. It is indicated here that Transparency and Accountability are the things that can solve this problem which then leads to the action of Social Accountability.
Social Accountability has it's own formula as well and this is "SAc = CCE (SD + W + R)" where social accountability is equals to Citizen’s constructive Engagement multiplied by Service delivery + Welfare protection + rights promotion. So we can concluded that our participation as a citizen is an important variable in solving corruption and we can do it hand-in-hand or in our own simple ways to maintain transparency. With this kind of engagement, we can increase transparency, ensure accountability and heightens participation.
Trust me, this solution is can really change the face of our government. I personally had an experience doing this in cooperation with the Government-Watch (G-Watch) by conducting surveys about the concerns of the citizens of a particular place and having a conversation to certain community leader that can have an action to these problems that we researched in their place. Also, this solution is now being taught to the youth especially who are members of the Global Youth Anti-Corruption Network (GYAC) and those who are in the scouting movement.
It only implies that we can make the change that we are all longing for in our government. So let us sharpen our senses and achieve the transparency needed to stop corruption.
Writer's note: This is a product of combing all knowledge received from my leadership trainings and political seminars.
By the way, I remembered that I already used the formula for social accountability in my State Of the Nation Address project in Phil. History
